Matt Johnson, born on February 3, 1969, in London, England, is a distinguished British keyboardist, composer, and producer, renowned for his integral role in the funk and jazz band Jamiroquai.
Johnson’s musical journey began at the tender age of one and a half when he started playing the piano at his family home.His father, a musician, ensured that music was a constant presence, nurturing Johnson’s early passion. He received formal training from a piano teacher, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His musical influences are diverse, encompassing legends like Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, as well as contemporary artists such as Squarepusher.
Before joining Jamiroquai, Johnson was involved with bands like Sunray and Nu Hope, showcasing his versatility as a writer and performer. He also collaborated with artists such as Kym Mazelle and Alexia, contributing his songwriting and production skills.
In 2002, Johnson’s career took a significant turn when he successfully auditioned for Jamiroquai, recommended by former band guitarist Simon Katz. He officially joined the band on May 2, 2002, replacing founding keyboardist Toby Smith. Since then, Johnson has been a pivotal member, co-writing over 20 songs, including hits like “Seven Days in Sunny June,” “Runaway,” and “White Knuckle Ride.” He also co-produced and co-wrote the band’s 2017 album, “Automaton.”
Beyond Jamiroquai, Johnson has an impressive portfolio, having produced and co-written for artists like Julian Perretta and Laura Doggett. He contributed to French singer Nolwenn Leroy’s album “Bretonne,” which sold over 1.5 million copies. In 2020, he released his debut solo album, “With the Music,” followed by a live album in 2023, recorded at PizzaExpress Jazz Club in Soho.
