Jeff Lorber

Jeff Lorber is an acclaimed American keyboardist, composer and producer, best known for his pioneering role in jazz fusion and smooth jazz. Born in 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lorber developed an early passion for jazz, influenced by artists like Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. He studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston before forming the Jeff Lorber Fusion in the mid-1970s.

The Jeff Lorber Fusion quickly gained recognition for blending jazz, funk, R&B, and rock elements, releasing influential albums such as The Jeff Lorber Fusion (1977) and Water Sign (1979). His 1980 album Wizard Island introduced saxophonist Kenny G, helping launch his career. In the 1980s, Lorber transitioned into a solo career, producing radio-friendly smooth jazz hits while also working as a producer and session musician for numerous artists.

After a brief hiatus, he revived Jeff Lorber Fusion in the 1990s, returning to his jazz-funk roots. His later albums, including He Had a Hat (2007) and Hacienda (2013), showcased his sophisticated compositions and keyboard mastery. In 2018, Prototype won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

Beyond his recordings, Lorber has collaborated with artists like Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, and Chick Corea, and his music remains a staple in contemporary jazz. His fusion of jazz with funk grooves and modern production techniques continues to influence generations of musicians.
