Six years after the release of their iconic Seaboard controller, Roli are back with the portable Lumi Keys. It’s primary function is educational since it has a key lighting system that connects with an instructional app. Unlike previous key lighting systems, the Lumi uses multiple colours and the entire key illuminates.
There’s the usual Guitar Hero / Rock Band style feed that you can follow, but the app also allows you to follow a score that can initially be colour-coded, so that you are also learning to read music correctly as you progress.
For musicians wishing to develop their improvisation skills, a jam feature allows you to play along with songs freely while illuminating the notes of the scale as a guide.
Despite the small size of the Lumi, the keys appear to have good depth and feature aftertouch. But one of the most appealing aspects is that it’s Roli Blocks compatible. The modular design means that not only can you attach blocks from the existing range, you can also connect up to three Lumi’s, giving you seamless 48 and 72 note options.
As before, Roli have launched a Kickstarter campaign with a target that they have already exceeded and a release date of October 2019. This is your chance to pick up a Lumi before they go on general release and at a discounted rate. More details here – Lumi Keys Kickstarter Campaign
